• All registered UC Davis students have medical/mental health, dental and vision insurance coverage (University of California Student Health Insurance Plan, also known as “UC SHIP”). Although our assistantship covers UC SHIP Fee each quarter, it does not guarantee free medical care (but the costs are significantly reduced). If you need medication or have a non-urgent medical condition, the best option is to first visit the Student Health and Counseling Services, because most services there are free or charged at a very low rate to your student account.

• If you want to see a doctor outside Student Health and Counseling Services in a non-emergency situation, you need a referral from your primary care physician at the Student Health and Counseling Services. If you don’t get the referral, UC SHIP might not cover you.

• TIP: in the US, most medications can only be purchased with a medical prescription. This means that you can buy only basic medication over-the-counter.
